Research project A02 in the Collaborative Research Centre 1357 Microplastics: The effects of microplastic particles on the soil-dwelling macrofauna and associated gut microbiota

My project is part of the CRC 1357 Microplastics. The aim is to investigate the effects of ingestion of microplastic (MP) particles on various terrestrial model organisms such as the soil-dwelling and substrate-eating compost worm Eisenia fetida or the soil-nesting omnivorous and native ant species Lasius niger. The effects of the most common polymer types as well as the effect of different MP shapes, sizes and concentrations are to be examined in order to better understand the mode of action of MP. For this purpose, we investigate classic life cycle parameters on the phenotypic level (mortality, reproductive success) but also sublethal stress and immune reactions using oxidative stress markers, transcriptome and proteome analyses. In addition, possible effects of MP on the activity and diversity of the gut microbiome will be investigated in order to determine possible indirect effects on the host.
